Our Experience With the Bridgestone Turanza EL440 Our media test vehicle was a Mazda CX-30 Turbo AWD. It had just under 10,000 miles on the odometer. We drove the Turanza EL440 tires on wet and dry paved roads as well as dry dirt roads and muddy wet dirt roads.

During a hard rain, over rain-soaked roads at about 60F, the tires did not slip under hard acceleration runs or in any cornering situations. In fact, even with the over 300 lb-ft of torque from the CX-30s engine, we could not get the tires to lose traction in any scenario.

From my very first drive, I noticed how effectively this tire absorbs road imperfections. Small cracks, expansion joints, and rough patches are filtered out with a plushness that genuinely adds to the luxury feel of the vehicle.

Wet traction is where the EL440 shows some limitations, and I want to be transparent about this. In light to moderate rain, the tire performs perfectly well. The four circumferential grooves channel water effectively, and I experienced no drama during normal-speed driving in typical rain.

On that light snow dusting — maybe half an inch of accumulation on secondary roads — the EL440 managed, but it wasn’t inspiring. Traction control intervened during acceleration a few times, and I could feel the rear end wanting to step out on slight inclines. For dedicated winter driving, you absolutely need winter tires.
