WHAT OWNERS SAY
Verified excerpts from independent owner reviews published elsewhere. Not Thermite Tactical customer reviews — we did not collect, solicit or pay for them.
The tire people actually put on the car for a track day.
The Toyo Proxes R888R is a DOT competition tire — a race compound on a street-legal casing. It is the evolution of the R888, with a tread design and contact patch aimed at faster lap times and more predictable dry handling. You can drive to the circuit on it, run your sessions, and drive home.
What you are buying is grip. UTQG treadwear is 100 and there is no mileage warranty, because this is a competition tire and Toyo does not pretend otherwise. If that trade sounds right, this is one of the most proven R-compounds you can bolt on.
›What makes it fast
- High-grip race compound — Comes up to operating temperature quickly and holds consistent grip once it is there.
- Optimized contact patch — More rubber on the road under braking, acceleration and cornering.
- Large outboard tread blocks — The outside shoulder is built to take the lateral load in a corner.
- Wide center rib — Directional stability and a precise, honest steering response on turn-in.
- Water evacuation channel — Assists wet traction so a damp session or the drive home is manageable.
Popular fitments: Chevrolet Corvette, BMW 3-Series, BMW 4-Series, Porsche 911, Porsche Cayman.
›Is this the right tire for you?
Yes, if you run track days, autocross, time attack or HPDE; you want maximum dry grip from a street-legal tire; and you accept short tread life as the cost.
No, if this is a daily driver, you see real rain or cold weather, you want a mileage warranty, or you want quiet. Owners consistently describe the R888R as loud at highway speed. For a street tire with track ability, ask us about a 200TW extreme-performance option instead — we would rather sell you the right tire than take the return.

›Questions people ask
How long do the R888R last?
Treat tread life as the trade for the grip. UTQG treadwear is 100, which is a race compound. Owners who street-drive them typically report somewhere around 5,000–10,000 miles; hard track use is measured in event days, not miles. If you want a tire that lasts, you want a 200TW extreme-performance tire instead - ask us and we will point you at one.
Are they street legal?
Yes. The R888R is DOT-approved and legal for road use, which is why people drive to the track on them. Toyo's own guidance is that it is recommended for competition events.
Can I drive them in the rain?
You can, and there is a water evacuation channel for exactly that, but treat it as a get-home capability rather than a wet-weather tire. Owners consistently report needing real caution on standing water. Slow down and leave room.
What about cold weather?
Do not use them below about 40°F, and never on snow or ice. It is a summer race compound - it goes hard and loses grip when cold, and the casing can be damaged by cold-weather use.
What pressures should I run?
Toyo's published guideline is 32–38 psi hot, with the tire in its 160–220°F operating window. Start lower cold and let them come up. Full setup guidance is in the Track setup section above.
Do they need a break-in or heat cycle?
A gentle heat cycle before the first hard session is good practice for any R-compound: a few easy laps, then let them cool fully. The R888R is noted for coming up to temperature quickly once it is scrubbed in.
Are these sold each or as a set?
Priced and sold per tire. Add four to the cart for a full set - or two if you are only doing one axle.
Can you install them?
Yes. We are Phoenix-based and do local delivery and mobile install in the valley, and we ship nationwide. Pick your size, and if you want it mounted, tell us at checkout or message us first.
Sold as singles. Buy four unless you like uneven wear.
